ASPIRING SKILLS & ALPINE ICE COURSES

LOCATION: Based at Shovel Flat, Mt Aspiring National Park or Mt Cook National Park by arrangement

SCHOOL OF MOUNTAINEERING: All weeks are based from our private hut "Avalanche Lodge" at Shovel Flat and include fun, skills learning and peak climbing with an experienced Tutor.

ASPIRING SKILLS COURSE: This 8 day course is for bushwalkers and hikers. Instruction involves rockclimbing, ice axe and crampon use, glacier travel and crevasse rescue and rivercrossing. We cover a similar programme to the Alpine Skills Course, however, greater emphasis is placed on fundamental rope handling skills. One to two peaks will be climbed during the course. Good tramping fitness is essential.

OBJECTIVE: To provide a thorough introduction to mountaineering and the required skills for peak climbing for strong trampers and fit outdoor enthusiasts.

COURSE SUBJECTS:

CLIMBING IN THE MT ASPIRING REGION and rivercrossing.

ROCK CLIMBING - Body movements, protection placement, leading roped pitches, belaying & abseiling

SNOWCRAFT - Ice Axe, Crampon and belaying techniques.

ROUTEFINDING, NAVIGATION, WEATHER ANALYSIS & HAZARDS, RISK & SAFETY

GLACIER TRAVEL, BIVOUACS, SNOWCAVES AND IGLOOS

CREVASSE RESCUE - Self extraction and rescue techniques: ICE CLIMBING - techniques, equipment & belaying.

Other topics are also included on the basis of available time and group interest including: Mtn 1st Aid, Avalanche awareness & transceiver rescue, expeditioning, fitness & flexibility.

COURSE PRE-REQUISITES:

Good tramping fitness; strong outdoor background & a skiing capability is an advantage. It is recommended that participants undertake a week of tramping prior to the course.

LOGISTICS: COURSE STARTING PLACE: 183 Warren St or by arrangement.

START TIME: DAY 1 - 0800 Hours FINISH TIME: DAY 8 - approx. 1700 Hours/ WANAKA

EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS CAN BE ORGANIZED BETWEEN 4 -6pm ON THE EVENING PRIOR TO THE COURSE

Day 1: 0800HRS: Meet at 183 Warren St. for one hour drive to the Matukituki Valley. Leave vehicle at Raspberry Hut. Three hour walk to Shovel Flat Base for lunch.AFTERNOON: Introduction to region, bouldering, slab & crack climbing in alpine boots & protection placement. EVENING: "Equipment for mountaineering"
Day 2: Ice Axe & Crampon workout on avalanche debris in Shovel Flat. AFTERNOON: Pitched rock climbing and abseiling on Liverpool Slabs. EVENING: Sort out equipment and food for daylight start.
Day 3: Daylight start for Mt Bevan involving easy/moderate rock climbing and snowclimbing.
Day 4: Crevasse Rescue practice at Shovel Flat. Evening: Pack for 3 day climbing trip
Day 5: Daylight start an alpine traverse on Maude Francis & Bonar Glaciers. Glacier travel techniques enroute.
Day 6: Peak climb. Bivouac or snowcave.
Day 7: Peak climb and glacier circuit via Bevan Col. Late return to base.
Day 8: Morning of technical revision, outline of climbing prospects and wind-down. Lunch. Afternoon walk out to Road. Arrive in Wanaka by 1700hrs.

NOTE: There are numerous other options to the above programme. Some are chosen by us because of snow conditions, party fitness or specific instructional terrain to suit the group. The weather often determines the order of instructional activities and we try to be on peaks on the fine days.

Day 3: Day Climb of Peak (Daylight start for Glengyle?) using snowcraft skills
Day 4: Day Climb of Peak (Daylight start for Rob Roy?)and return to Base. (If weather bad, crevasse rescue practice at base)
Day 5: Organize equipment and supplies for late start to an alpine bivi/snowcave on Bonar Glacier. Glacier travel enroute.
Day 6: Peak climb(Popes Nose or Aspiring?) and crevasse rescue practice. Return to snowcave.
Day 7: Peak climb and glacier circuit via Bevan Col. Late return to base.
Day 8: Morning of technical revision, outline of climbing prospects and wind-down. Lunch. Afternoon walk out to Road. Arrive in Wanaka by 1700hrs.
