Mountain Recreation Ltd, based in Wanaka, is the oldest, privately owned, professional mountaineering school & guiding service in New Zealand. MountainRec has held mountain guiding licences for Mt. Aspiring National Park since 1974, and for Mt. Cook/Westland National Parks since 1984. MountainRec also conduct guided treks and climbs in the Himalaya.
The company's directors are Geoff & Beryl Wayatt and Jim Strang. Geoff Wayatt commenced guiding in 1966, and is NZ’s most experienced mountain guide. Beryl has treked and climbed in Canada & Peru, recently climbed Mt. Aspiring, and climbed to 20,000ft with our Nepal 1999 Trek - Climb Expedition (see Himalaya ).
Jim Strang is our education advisor. He is a professional guidance counsellor in Christchurch. Jim's current personal challenge is developing a new teacher training programme in Nepal to assist Ed Hillary's Himalayan Trust.
All of our guides are dedicated and qualified professional mountaineers with extensive expedition experience. Many are past MountainRec course participants.
Our private Mountain Hut "AVALANCHE LODGE" is at the base of Mt Aspiring. We can provide support and catering for individual and group mountain holidays, including: Trekking, geography, photography workshops, and team-building.
Our Aspiring Guided Treks range from easy 3 day valley treks with day packs to energetic 4 day trek/climbs of Mt. French, 1 day Remarkable scramble and 3-4 day Franz/Fox glacier trips.
We run annual 25 day trek/climbs to Nepal utilising the experience of Geoff and Chhuldim Temba Sherpa to provide a unique high altitude holiday.
We also undertake private mountain & ski expeditions, filming location and industrial mountaineering, rigging tasks, and snow safety/avalanche consulting.
Climbing School objectives: We train for future mountaineers. Our traditions are based on those of the Aspiring pioneers. We do this by climbing the difficult access routes & sleeping mainly in bivis and snowcaves. Our courses are energetic & instruction is done on peaks. We prefer to be independent of helicopters and huts. Our success is typified by past MtnRec participants and tutors: Russell Brice, Peter Hillary, Mike Groom, Jon Muir, Pat Cullinan, Dick Price and Chuldim Temba Sherpa(2) are all Everest summiters.
